The elevator tone sounded once—soft, expensive, final.
Every person at the edges of the atrium lowered their eyes in the same instant. The change in the air was immediate and physical. Pressure dropped the way it did in a plane beginning its descent, except the building had not moved. The recessed lights dimmed a fraction—not enough to trip a sensor, just enough that the black marble seemed to drink what brightness remained.
“While you are on this floor, every document request is voiced aloud in my presence. You do not remove materials from the building. You do not transmit findings to the contracting agency until I have reviewed them. You address me as Samyaza. Repeat the conditions.”
“You will return at eight tomorrow morning. The vault will be open. I will be present for the first hour. After that, requests continue to come to me directly. If I am not on the floor, you wait.”
“Understood.”
Only then did he sit. The high-backed chair accepted him without sound.
